Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) and Carole King (Tapestry) bring Rosie and the Nutshell Kids (Pierre, Alligator, Johnny and Chef Jeff [aka “Chicken Soup”] to life in this classic musical adventure.

Sendak, the Caldecott Medal-winning genius, published the four-title miniature Nutshell Library in 1962. It featured Alligators all Around, Chicken Soup with Rice, One was Johnny, and Pierre. From these books, children learned the alphabet, counting, the months of the year and how to survive a scare with a boy that doesn’t care.

Carole King, the four-time Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter, crafted the music to accompany the Nutshell stories for a 1975 animated video, then a 1980 Broadway production (on which this show is based). King is perhaps best known for the song “You’ve got a Friend,” made popular by James Taylor, as well as her own hits “It’s Too Late” and the theme song for the television show “Gilmore Girls.”

ECU Storybook Theatre brings to life the work of two creative geniuses in a performance that plays to young audiences (Nutshell Library content) as well as old (award-winning music). It’s about fine arts (music, rhythm), Language arts (storytelling, language mechanics) and life skills (what to do with yourself on a hot day in the city). Recommended for grades preK-5. Study guide to follow.
