Inspiring and energetic, this New York-based chamber music sextet changes the rules of performance as we know it: the audience selects the program. Help select ECU’s program from a menu of 30 works, from Baroque to Broadway.

Performance timing

Ninety minutes with no intermission.

“The people around me were ordering music the way I order a burger. “I’ll take the Prokofiev,” No. 12 declared. “Let’s have the Bach,” No. 2 said.

At a Mélange concert, where crowdsourcing crashes into classical, every guest gets a number. If yours is called, you pick the next piece. Read more from the New York Times

About the ensemble

Mélange founder Elian Avni nearly fell off his elliptical machine when his iPod shuffled from a Pretenders tune to Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony. But the moment yielded an eye-popping way to present music. “It’s like eating in New York,” he said. “You’ll have pizza tonight, falafel tomorrow and go to a five-star French restaurant the night after.”

Instead of a traditional program, audiences receive a program book and a number when they enter the auditorium. After each selection, the ensemble selects a number, and that audience member selects the next piece of music on the program. Viola: a mélange.
